Belenenses played some nice football in patches in Lisbon tonight but ended up on the wrong side of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Benfica.

Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Benfica (agg. 4-1)

Under the headline of “Two-speed Europe” the director of Portuguese sports paper A Bola, Vítor Serpa, writes in today’s edition: “there is an increasingly large gulf between the best European teams and the best Portuguese teams. There may be exceptions to the rule, but they are only exceptions that disguise the reality for those who don’t want to see it.”

The editorial was written in the wake of yesterday’s 4-0 drubbing of Benfica by Borussia Dortmund. Given the difference in class shown in both legs between the Portuguese champions (and current leaders of the Liga NOS) and the team lying 3rd in the Bundesliga (13 points behind Bayern Munich), it is difficult to argue with that stark assessment.

Ahead of an important weekend of action, largely due to the recurring to and fro between Liga NOS leaders Benfica and their direct challengers FC Porto, Sporting sought to add to the headlines with a looming presidential election and an equally significant fixture to boot.

Porto took the initiative and were on cue to flaunt their qualities against a troubled Nacional side with a comprehensive 7-0 victory prior to Benfica’s trip to Santa Maria da Feira.

There, Feirense hoped to cause an upset against Rui Vitória’s side, but a 1-0 win would be enough to propel the Eagles back to first place.

This result leads us to what was tipped to be the pick of the weekend. On the back of Bruno de Carvalho’s crushing electoral victory, there was nothing to choose between third placed Sporting and Vitória de Guimarães in fifth, as the two outfits played out a 1-1 draw.
