Lyon 2-2 Manchester United

The battle between Portuguese coaches ended up in a draw in the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, as Paulo Fonseca’s Lyon salvaged a late 2-2 draw against Manchester United of Rúben Amorim to set up a tantalising second leg next week.

Both sides led on the night, with Lyon going ahead before United hit back to hold a 2-1 advantage heading into the dying moments, at which point Lyon were rewarded for being the more proactive side through Ryan Cherki’s last-gasp equaliser.

Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Aston Villa

French champions Paris Saint-Germain are in the driving seat heading into the second leg of their Champions League quarter final, after beating Aston Villa in the French capital.

Nuno Mendes scored what could be a crucial third goal in stoppage time, while Vitinha and Joao Neves also shone once again in midfield for Luis Enrique’s side, who impressed neutrals with a thrilling display.

The Campeonato Brasileiro played out Matchday 2 of the new season at the weekend, during which Portuguese bosses Pepa and Abel Ferreira faced off in a controversial match between Sport Recife and Palmeiras.

Elsewhere, Leonardo Jardim has endured a bad week with new club Cruzeiro, while Renato Paiva got his first league win with Botafogo, but Pedro Caixinha is making an unconvincing start with Santos.

Toluca 2-1 Santos Laguna

Paulinho has established himself as one of the most consistent goalscorers in Mexican football, and the Portugal international was again on-target this weekend for Toluca against Santos Laguna.

However, it was Paulinho’s sporting gesture which took much of the attention following the match in Liga MX, after the striker successfully argued against a red card given to opposition player Javier Güemez.
