The Seleção finished an unusually smooth Euro 2024 qualification campaign with two routine wins over Liechtenstein and Iceland to make it ten straight victories under Spanish coach Roberto Martínez.

It is the first time Portugal have won every one of their matches in a qualifying campaign for a major tournament, and the swagger shown in many of the goal-laden victories has re-enthused the Seleção fan base after things had gone stale under Fernando Santos.

In addition to new tactical approaches that appear to have unlocked Portugal’s offensive firepower, a major theme of the Martínez era has been the emergence of Bruno Fernandes as the team’s chief orchestrator. 

Portugal’s perfect record in the U21 European Championship qualifiers came to an end after a 2-1 defeat in Greece.

Rui Jorge’s side overcame a slow start at Stadio Theodoros Kolokotronis where Francisco Conceição opened the scoring in the 29th minute, the winger cutting inside and smashing a long distance shot into the top corner.

Their lead lasted less than a minute, the impressive Christos Tzolis starting and finishing a move which saw him steer the ball into the bottom corner.

Greece took the lead five minutes into the second half, Fotis Kitsos streaking down the left wing and delivering a cross that was converted by Michail Panagidis.

The Equipa das Quinas failed to mount any serious pressure in the closing stages, the hosts holding on to join Portugal and Croatia in a three way battle to qualify from Group G.

The Seleção exerted their superiority early on and deservedly took the lead in the 37th minute when Bruno Fernandes drilled a low drive into the net from distance

Ricardo Horta came off the bench to double the advantage in the 66th minute, poking home from close range after João Félix and Cristiano Ronaldo saw their shots saved.

Iceland went close to a consolation goal in added time when Arnor Traustason’s deflected shot hit the bar, but it was too little too late for the Vikings who were largely outclassed from start to finish.

Roberto Martínez’s side became the first Portugal side to win every match in a qualifying phase for a major tournament, the two goals conceded another milestone alongside the record breaking 9-0 victory against Luxembourg. 

Portugal registered their ninth consecutive win in the European Championship qualifiers after beating Liechtenstein 2-0 in Vaduz.

The game was goalless at half-time but that was rapidly rectified two minutes after the break, Cristiano Ronaldo racing clear and firing a powerful shot past Benjamin Büchel.

João Cancelo did it all himself to double the Seleção’s advantage in the 57th minute, José Sá making an important save four minutes later to deny Dennis Salanovic.

Gonçalo Ramos was denied a goal due to a lengthy VAR intervention, Portugal closing out a comfortable victory in front of a 5,749 capacity crowd at Rheinpark Stadion.
