It was a memorable night at the Estádio da Luz with six goals from six different scorers ensuring Benfica secured three points to maintain the pressure on rivals Sporting. A 6-0 victory on Sunday evening places the Eagles atop the Primeira Liga standings with a three-point lead over Sporting, at least temporarily.

Benfica produced arguably their best half of the campaign with a stunning blitz that Aves had no answer for. The goals came from all corners of the pitch with Tomás Araújo, Vangelis Pavlidis, Zeki Amdouni, Kerem Aktürkoglu, Andrea Belotti, Nicolás Otamendi all getting their names on the scoresheet. 

For AVS, it was a night to forget. The visitors never really challenged their opponents, failing to match the home side's energy, intensity and skill on the night. With just three points separating Aves from the relegation zone, they would have been hoping to take something from the fixture. Unfortunately, a lackluster performance from AVS means they are now at risk of dropping back down to the second division.

Estrela da Amadora produced a convincing 2-0 victory against Porto at Estadio José Gomes. Kikas missed two golden opportunities early on before finishing his third chance in the 38th minute.

The striker instigated a penalty after the break, his cross picking out Leonel Bucca who was taken out by Cláudio Ramos. Alan Ruiz made no mistake from the spot, Jovane Cabral hitting the bar late on with the Dragons well beaten.

The result sees Amadora move away from relegation danger and the Dragons remain in fourth spot with three games to go in the Primeira Liga.

Sunday’s match between Sporting CP and Boavista FC will see the top and bottom teams in the Primeira Liga meet in what promises to be a fascinating encounter between two of Portugal’s most decorated clubs. Disregarding the 51-point gap separating these two sides in the table, this is a massive fixture that will have implications on the championship race and the relegation battle.

After picking up six points from their last three matches, Boavista have given themselves a fighting chance of working their way out of the bottom two. Newly-appointed manager Stuart Baxter has brought with him a sense of optimism, and with a vibrant home crowd driving them forward, the Panthers will be aiming to walk away with something from this match. 

Sporting are looking to become the first Portuguese side to repeat as league champions since SL Benfica achieved the feat back in 2017. The Lions sit atop the standings but Benfica have matched their Lisbon rivals every step up the way, with the two sides level on points going into the final four games of the campaign. 

Benfica made light work of surprise Portuguese Cup semi-finalists Tirsense with a 4-0 win at the Estádio da Luz on Wednesday night, to complete a 9-0 aggregate victory.

As in the first leg, Benfica boss Bruno Lage heavily rotated his team with António Silva and Florentino Luís the only players who started the weekend win at Vitória keeping their place in the starting XI.

Tirsense had done tremendously well to reach the last four – the first 4th-tier side to do so in the long history of the competition – and put up a good fight in Lisbon. With 74 minutes on the clock Benfica only led by Antonio Silva’s goal on the stroke of half time.

But the hosts made their superiority count in the closing stages. Albanian centre-back Adrian Bajrami scored his first goal for Benfica, with Andrea Belotti and Leandro Barreiro completing the rout.

The Eagles will meet Lisbon rivals Sporting in the final at Jamor on 25 May.
