An entertaining night’s action in Lisbon tonight saw Sporting and Arsenal share four goals in a back-and-forth encounter.

William Saliba opened the scoring for the visitors from a corner, with Gonçalo Inácio responding in kind to make it 1-1 at the break. Sporting took the lead through Paulinho but the striker then missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-1, and an unlucky Morita own goal made it all square. 

Benfica breezed past Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg, winning 5-1 to go through 7-1 on aggregate.

The result was never in doubt at Estádio da Luz, Gonçalo Ramos assisting Rafa for the opener in the 37th minute before scoring two goals either side of the break.

There was no way back for the Belgian club who were continually on the back foot, João Mário netting another penalty and David Neres scoring a fifth goal before Bjorn Meijer’s late consolation.

Roger Schmidt, his side and all Benfica supporters will be eagerly awaiting the quarter-final draw.

Jornada 23 of the 2022/23 Liga Bwin season contained within it the familiar feeling of the traditional top four all tasting victory, in the case of Porto and Braga it was positive responses to disappointments the round previous, the pair overcoming Chaves and Rio Ave respectively to get back on track.

Benfica remained imperious at the top after a win over Famalicão, and Sporting’s recent run of good results went on by beating Portimonense. Vizela arrested a slump by defeating Estoril, while Gil Vicente’s excellent moment continued courtesy of triumph against Marítimo.

Another team very much in the groove is Vitória Guimarães. Buoyed after derby success over Braga last week, they continued their positive momentum into their game at Santa Clara, where Brazilian forward and PortuGOAL Figure of the Week Alisson Safira shone to maintain his own rich vein of form.

Braga put the disappointing Minho derby defeat behind them after a comfortable 2-0 win against Rio Ave at the Quarry.

Artur Jorge’s side were clearly the better team and deservedly took the lead in the 36th minute, Abel Ruiz releasing Iuri Medeiros who picked out an unmarked Bruma in front of goal.

The Warriors were keen to put the game to bed which was finally achieved in the 78th minute.

It was a great goal from Simon Banza, the substitute unleashing an unstoppable overhead kick to put Braga back in the winner’s circle.

The match was notable for 20-year-old Serdar Saatçi, the centre back making his first senior start for Braga after moving from Besiktas in the summer.
