Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth
There was a very special moment for Portuguese youngster Fábio Carvalho this weekend as the midfielder scored his first goal in the colours of new club Liverpool.
The Reds equalled the Premier League’s biggest victory by hammering Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield, during which Carvalho came off the bench at half time to score his first goal in top-flight football with a volleyed finish in the 80th minute.
José Fonte will turn 39 in December, but the Portugal and Lille defender has scarcely played as much football as he has during the last year. As skipper of the French side and a regular for the Selecao, Fonte remains as active now as at any point since turning professional some twenty years ago.
Fonte was named Lille’s Player of the Year last term, having played every single minute of action in Ligue 1 – the oldest in history to do so – and clocking 49 appearances in total for club and country. In Germany, Raphaël Guerreiro was on target but Borussia Dortmund suffered a remarkable collapse at home to Werder Bremen.
Lille 1-7 PSG
Paris Saint-Germain laid down an ominous marker this weekend in France by hammering Paulo Fonseca’s Lille 7-1 away from home on Sunday in Ligue 1.
Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick, while there was a brace for Neymar and further goals by Lionel Messi and Achraf Hakimi. There were also several Portuguese across the two sides, with Nuno Mendes, Vitinha and Renato Sanches featuring among the victors, while Jose Fonte and Tiago Djaló suffered for the home side.
