Sporting overcame another potential tricky hurdle on their way to winning the Portuguese championship with the minimum of fuss, beating high-flying Vitória 3-0 at Alvalade to move ten points clear of Benfica at the top of the table, albeit having played a game more.

Although not at their dynamic best, a patient Sporting team opened the scoring on the half hour through Pedro Gonçalves.

Viktor Gyökeres bagged a brace with goals either side of half time following brilliant team moves to give the Lions a 15th victory in 15 Primeira Liga games played in their home stadium in 2023/24.

Casa Pia 1-2 FC Porto

FC Porto have returned to winning ways after defeating Casa Pia 2-1 away from home, this Sunday evening, moving back up to third in the Primeira Liga table.

The Dragons fired themselves in front on the half-hour mark through Galeno but the hosts spiked the stress levels soon after with a prompt Nuno Moreira equaliser, still in the first half.

Porto reinstated their lead in good time, however, in the second period, courtesy of an eye-catching Nico González strike that was enough to tilt the balance in the visitors’ favour, securing a 2-1 win on the road.

Stalemate specialists Rio Ave lived up to their reputation after an entertaining 1-1 draw against Arouca at Estádio dos Arcos.

The visitors got on top but fell behind in the 36th minute when Joca beat the offside trap, racing onto João Teixeira’s pass and placing the ball over Ignacio de Arruabarrena.

Arouca equalised two minutes after the restart, Morlaye Sylla getting past some feeble defence before picking out Rafa Mújica who scored his 20th Primeira Liga goal of the season.

Rio Ave went closest to regaining the lead in the 77th minute, Emmanuel Boateng going on a long run and smashing a powerful effort into the post.

The result leaves Luís Freire’s side four points above Portimonense with four games to play.
