FC Porto 3-0 Santa Clara

Porto took a step closer to winning the Primeira Liga with a dominant 3-0 win at the Estádio do Dragão last night.

Two first-half goals by Fábio Vieira set the Dragons on their way, with Zaidu Sanusi putting the icing on the cake late on.

Sporting have gone nine points clear of third-placed Benfica after a 2-0 win at home to Paços de Ferreira, this Sunday night, applying pressure on table-topping FC Porto.

The Eagles opened up the avenue for Sporting to extend their lead over them after falling to a 3-2 defeat against Sporting de Braga on Friday night, in a game won by the on-form Vitinha.

Rúben Amorim’s men followed up their city rival’s slip-up with a routine victory 2-0 at the Alvalade, secured by Pablo Sarabia and Nuno Santos on the eve of Porto’s clash against Santa Clara.

FC Porto reasserted their 6-point lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Boavista at the Bessa on Sunday night, thanks to a Fábio Vieira goal.

Porto have now equalled their club record for consecutive unbeaten matches in the Primeira Liga - 55 games - and are one off the all-time Portuguese record, held by Benfica and set almost half a century ago. 

Benfica followed up their Champions League success in midweek with a 2-1 victory at home against Estoril, with Rafa Silva scoring a contender for goal of the season. 

A narrow “Invicta” derby win for Porto over Boavista concluded the twenty-seventh round of Primeira Liga matches of 2021/22. Title rivals Sporting and Benfica both kept pace by virtue of beating Vitória Guimarães and Estoril respectively.

Braga followed up their European exploits in midweek with a victory at Portimonense, while Gil Vicente’s unbeaten run continued to see them further secure fifth place in a 1-1 draw with Marítimo.

Another side on an excellent run is Paços de Ferreira, a fourth win in five for them after battling past Moreirense. Newly-appointed manager Cesár Peixoto has been a big reason for their revival this year and he is under the microscope in this edition of the PortuGOAL Figure of the Week.
