Champions League wrap
It was a positive Champions League week for Portugal’s two representatives in the world’s greatest club competition as Benfica and Porto both tasted victory. Ten-man Benfica got the better of AEK Athens in Greece in a wild 5-goal thriller, while Porto beat Turkish champions Galatasaray at the Dragão thanks to a Moussa Marega header.
Elsewhere, dark clouds continue to hover for Portuguese coaches José Mourinho and Leonardo Jardim, but it was a positive matchday for Bernardo Silva, Nelson Semedo and Mário Rui. PortuGOAL reports on all the Portuguese participation in the latest round of Champions League matches.
An entertaining weekend of action in Liga NOS served up a host of contenders for this edition of PortuGOAL’s Figure of the Week. Four players hit two goals in impressive performances: Wilson Eduardo helped Braga stay top against Belenenses, Carlos Vinícius continued his excellent start with Rio Ave, while Gevorg Ghazaryan and Rafa Silva each bagged two goals in probably the game of the round as Chaves and Benfica drew 2-2.
One of the major stories in Portugal over the summer that was overshadowed by coverage of the World Cup, transfer rumours, presidential elections and incriminating emails was the split that happened to one of the country’s most historical clubs, Os Belenenses.
With the hunt for the Primeira Liga top-spot bubbling nicely, attentions turned to what Matchday 6 could bring ahead of another week of European football.
After a lengthy hiatus thanks to the international break, as well as the commencement of the Taça da Liga group phase, Liga NOS made a welcome return to action this weeked.
