Sérgio Oliveira is enjoying a dream start to life in Italy with José Mourinho’s Roma. The Portuguese midfielder followed up his debut goal from last weekend with another – plus an assist – as the Giallorossi cruised to a 4-2 victory at Empoli on Sunday night.

The other main headline makers this weekend were Wolves duo João Moutinho and Rúben Neves, both of whom scored superb goals as Bruno Lage’s side won against Brentford in the English Premier League. Elsewhere, there was a goal for Danilo Pereira in France for Paris Saint-Germain, while Fábio Carvalho, Lucas João and Dany Mota struck in the second tiers of England and Italy.

Fulham 6-2 Birmingham City

It has been a remarkable start to 2022 for Marco Silva’s Fulham in the English Championship. Having successfully navigated the third round of the FA Cup, the Cottagers have a 100% league record in New Year – scoring an astonishing 19 goals in three matches so far since the start of January.

Central to recent performances has been Portugal-born midfielder Fábio Carvalho, who has scored three goals in the last two games. Carvalho struck twice and recorded an assist in the 6-2 win over Birmingham City on Tuesday evening, earning the Man of the Match award

Rafael Leão is pushing for a greater role in Portugal’s World Cup qualifying play-off after another goal for AC Milan in Serie A on Monday night. The former Sporting forward now has three goals and two assists in his last four matches for his team, and was regarded as the best player on the pitch despite the Rossoneri losing 2-1 at home to Spezia.

Elsewhere, Seleção regulars Bruno Fernandes and André Silva were also on the scoresheet, while youngster Fabio Carvalho found the net in another resounding victory for Marco Silva’s Fulham in the Championship. In Turkey, meanwhile, Carlos Mané scored a late equaliser for Kayserispor with just minutes left on the clock to earn a point in the Super Lig.

Sunday afternoon saw Portuguese internationals Nani and Sérgio Oliveira both make their debuts for Italian sides Venezia and Roma respectively, and things could scarcely have gone better for the duo in Serie A.

Nani’s eagerly anticipated showing in Venice came against Empoli, where he was introduced as a late substitute and the Seleção legend immediately made the difference by creating an equaliser. Meanwhile in the capital, Oliveira scored from the spot to hand Jose Mourinho’s Roma a 1-0 win over Cagliari.
