Matchday four of the Liga Bwin is done and dusted after a round of matches punctuated by some major shocks in Portugal’s top division, the first of which being promoted Chaves stunning last season’s runners up Sporting at Estádio José Alvalade.
Portimonense continued their fine form with a third straight win, whilst another of the league new boys Casa Pia also secured consecutive victories in the top flight, impressively winning away at Vitória Guimarães.
The other aforementioned shock though was in some ways bigger than the first, defending champions Porto humbled by Rio Ave after a devastating first half display from the Primeira Liga returnees. The display was lit up by a sensational striker’s performance from Aziz Yakubu, our PortuGOAL Figure of the Week.
Rio Ave produced the second big upset in the Primeira Liga this weekend after sensationally defeating Porto 3-1 in Vila do Conde. The promoted club took a 3-0 lead into the break after Aziz scored twice, either side of creating a goal for Pedro Amaral.
Famalicão secured their first goal and first win of the season in a hard fought 1-0 victory against Santa Clara. Zaydou Youssouf scored the winner in the 20th minute with Matheus Babi spurning two great chances to equalise.
Leixões comfortably defeated Nacional 3-0 at Estádio do Mar to maintain unbeaten start to the fledgling Segunda Liga season. Zé Eduardo capitalized on a defensive error in the 37th to give Vítor Martins’ side a deserved half-time lead.
It was a memorable night at the Alvalade stadium for Chaves as the team from the northern tip of Portugal obtained a well-deserved 2-0 win over Sporting thanks to second-half goals by Steven Vitória and Juninho.
