FC Porto have been crowned the 2021/22 Primeira Liga champions after landing a late 1-0 victory against Benfica at the Estádio da Luz to secure all three points, this evening.

The Dragons were out to repeat the scenes of 11 years ago that infamously saw the northern outfit celebrate the league title at the Luz in the dark and with the watering system turned on. Porto required just one point to earn them the right to hold the prized trophy aloft.

As the two sides readied themselves to share the spoils, a 94th minute Zaidu Sanusi finish, supplemented by a devastating Pepê counter-attack, rubber-stamped a title-winning campaign for Porto - Sérgio Conceição’s third in five years.

The 2021/22 Liga Bwin campaign continues to hurtle towards conclusion with only two rounds of matches remaining after Jornada 32 was closed out by Paços Ferreira and Tondela’s draw last night.

The destination of the title appears Porto-bound as the league leaders bounced back from losing their long unbeaten run in the weekend prior to overcome Vizela. Sporting made them wait for official confirmation as championship winners by thrashing Gil Vicente.

Matters at the top seem sewn up but down at the bottom there remains plenty to play for. One side who escaped the mire is Famalicão, who began the round’s action with a pivotal win against Estoril, with their injury-hit winger Heriberto Tavares to heavily thank as his fine display inspired the three points and also sees him claim this edition of the PortuGOAL Figure of the Week.

FC Porto have been made to wait a further week to get their hands on the Primeira Liga title after a 4-1 win for Sporting against Gil Vicente, securing UEFA Champions League qualification, kept the Lions in the hunt for first place, mathematically.

The Lions skipped by the Barcelos outfit in an open affair at the Alvalade, defeating their opponents with goals from Pedro Sarabia and Pedro Gonçalves. 

Prior to Sporting’s home date with Gil Vicente, Benfica kept the pressure on in Madeira with a slender 1-0 victory against Marítimo, granted by an early Darwin Nuñez strike against the 10-men of Vasco Seabra.

Saturday night was completed by Porto’s home triumph versus Vizela, defeating the Primeira Liga new boys 4-2 to take Sérgio Conceição’s men within a point of clinching the league title.

Porto’s long unbeaten run coming to an end at the hands of Braga was a notable event of Liga Bwin 2021/22’s 31st round of matches, Sporting managing to keep some faint title hopes alive in the process by beating Boavista.

Portimonense secured their Primeira Liga status for another season with a narrow win over Moreirense, while bottom pair Tondela and Belenenses SAD fractionally edged their way towards safety with battling draws.

One side that looks to have escaped the dogfight is Vizela, who overcame fellow strugglers Arouca in a tense tussle on Friday evening’s round opener. Our PortuGOAL Figure of the Week is Brazilian forward Guilherme Schettine, who scored twice on the night to secure the vital three points.
