Vitória de Guimarães earned a deserved 1-1 draw against Porto thanks to a late equaliser from Úmaro Embaló.

Martín Anselmi’s side bossed the first half at Estádio do Dragão with Zé Pedro and Gonçalo Borges going close, Danny Namaso scoring from an offside position minutes before the break.

Vitória put the ball into the back of the net in the 55th minute when Nélson Oliveira converted Tiago Silva's through ball, Diogo Costa breathing a sigh of relief after the VAR spotted Tomás Händel a millimeter offside in the buildup. Luís Freire was filthy and got himself sent off.

Otávio cleared Toni Borevković’s header off the line but Porto got back into the contest and took the lead in the 67th minute. Guimarães failed with three opportunities to clear the danger, the ball falling to Fábio Vieira who stepped inside João Teixeira Mendes and found the far corner.

The Dragons were unable to hold on, Teixeira Mendes and Borevković firing warning shots before Nuno Santos sent Úmaro Embaló clear, the substitute holding off Tiago Djaló and slotting the ball past Costa.

The point was enough to take Porto back into third spot on the table, level with Braga but six points behind Sporting CP and Benfica.

Sporting Clube de Portugal drew 2-2 against AVS to reclaim top spot in the Primeira Liga.

Ousmane Diomande headed home Trincão's cross in the 8th minute, the VAR taking almost three minutes to rule the defender onside and award the goal.

Zé Luís tested Rui Silva on two occasions, but Viktor Gyökeres was giving Aderllan Santos a hard time took advantage in the 33rd minute. He combined with Trincão, breezed past Santos and converted Maxi Araújo’s cross from close range.

AVS got back into the contest after Ousmane Diomande struck Lucas Piazón in the face which saw him booked and a penalty awarded. Luís sent Silva the wrong way in the 71st minute, Diomande sent off eight minutes later when he went in late on Gustavo Mendonça.

Rui Borges was counting down the seconds but the Lions couldn’t hold on, a corner deep in added time cleared to Mendonça who fired a low drive into the bottom corner.

The result sees Sporting join Benfica on 53 points, the Lions sitting top of the table due to a superior head to head record.

Benfica 3-0 Boavista

A comprehensive 3-0 victory for SL Benfica on Saturday evening saw the Lisbon club move above their city rivals Sporting CP for the first time since December. A new-look Boavista FC lineup was little match for a vibrant and energetic Benfica side that hardly put a foot wrong at the Estadio da Luz. 

Boavista, desperately in need of points, could not afford to set up cautiously and manager Lito Vidigal came out with an attacking lineup for Saturday’s fixture, going with three at the back. The decision seemed to backfire, with Benfica punishing the Porto club with some effortless midfield passing and dangerous wing play. In the end, the scoreline was somewhat kind to a Boavista side that played the majority of the match in their own half. 

Andrea Belotti, Evangelos Pavlídis and Orkun Kökçü were all able to get their names on the scoresheet, but this was a comprehensive performance from a Benfica side that seems to be hitting their stride at the perfect point of the season.

SL Benfica will take on Boavista FC at the Estádio da Luz this week with both sides desperately seeking three points for very different reasons. Saturday’s clash sees two clubs on opposite ends of the table face off. As teams enter the final third of the 2024-25 season, every point will be vital.

With just two points separating Benfica and Sporting CP at the top of the table, the Eagles have the chance to overtake their inter-city rivals for the first time in 2025. Meanwhile, Boavista have failed to secure a point in the league since December, plummeting down the table to find themselves in a relegation scrap for a second consecutive season.
