It all started so well for Sporting. Both their Champions League campaign as a whole – two wins from the opening two matches – and the decisive game against Eintracht Frankfurt in Lisbon tonight.

Needing just a draw to progress to the last-16 knockout stage, Sporting went into the break leading thanks to an Arthur Gomes goal. But the Germans dominated the second 45 minutes, turning in around through goals from Daichi Kamada and Randal Kolo Muani and running out deserved winners. 

Porto produced a convincing 2-1 victory against Atlético Madrid to make it four straight wins in the Champions League and steal top spot in Group B.

Sérgio Conceição’s side took the lead in the 5th minute when Mehdi Taremi converted from close range. Galeno was instrumental in creating the second goal for Stephen Eustáquio who found the bottom corner in the 24th minute.

Jan Oblak was one of the only bright sparks for the Spanish club, continually preventing the Dragons from running away with the contest.

Iván Marcano’s added time own goal meant the score was an unfair reflection of what was largely one sided contest. Diego Simeone’s side were second best throughout, their European ambitions coming to a premature conclusion.

The 2022/23 Liga Bwin season is now eleven rounds down after the latest batch of top flight matches. Benfica continue to set the pace at the top, thrashing Chaves to take advantage of Porto’s slip-up at Santa Clara. 

Braga also profited from the latter event, moving into second place after beating Gil Vicente. Surprise package Casa Pia returned to winning ways after a recent mini-blip, while Marítimo finally recorded a maiden victory for the campaign, overcoming a similarly struggling Paços Ferreira.

There are no struggles in sight currently for Vitória Guimarães however, who kept on rolling with a win over Famalicão. Winger Nélson Luz was their star on the night, the PortuGOAL Figure of the Week bagging twice to help his side into Primeira Liga’s top four.

Porto were unable to turn their dominance into a positive result after a 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Youth League. Fernando Torres’ side took an early lead in Pedroso when Adrián Niño converted a penalty.

The Portuguese club continued to press for an equaliser which eventually came in the 47th minute when Tiago Andrade steered the ball into the bottom corner.

The come back was short lived however, Abde Raihani converting from close range less than a minute later.

The result wasn’t catastrophic for Porto who will now contest a play-off to remain in the competition they won in 2018-19.
