FC Porto’s 2-0 victory over Sporting tonight at the Estádio do Dragão sealed the club’s 29^th Portuguese championship title.

Even most fans of the Blue and Whites would agree this is not a vintage Porto side, but the team have won the most games, lost the least, scored the most goals and conceded the fewest out of all 18 Liga NOS clubs in 2019/20, and with two matches to go they are eight points clear at the top of the table. There can be no doubt Sérgio Conceição’s men are worthy champions.

This season will go down in history, not only because of the unprecedented interruption because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Never before had a team who had been seven points clear at the top of the table at the halfway stage failed to go on to win the title. It happened this season, with Porto taking full advantage of Benfica’s implosion.

Little surprise, therefore, that despite the lack of fans in the stadium to rejoice with the team, the post-match reaction was no less euphoric for it.

FC Porto have clinched the 2019/20 Primeira Liga title after defeating Sporting 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão, this Wednesday.

The Dragons, requiring just a point from the Clássico, signed off their hunt for the championship in style with a victory against their rivals, with a towering Danilo Pereira header and a Moussa Marega chip separating the two sides at full-time to deal Rúben Amorim his first league defeat of his career.

As Porto celebrated, their win saw Sporting’s advantage over fourth-placed Braga cut to just two points, with a final Clássico for the Lions against Benfica still left to tick off on the league calendar.

Benfica have prolonged FC Porto’s wait for the Primeira Liga title after registering a 2-0 home victory versus Vitória de Guimarães on Tuesday night.

The Eagles, in a game generally dominated by the visitors, were able to strike late in both halves to clock up a 2-0 victory, leaving Porto to search for the point required to nail champion status themselves, against none other than the in-form Sporting.

Elsewhere, Braga were unable to ramp up the pressure on the Lions, having led 1-0 against Belenenses at home before to two sides closed out with a 1-1 draw, leaving Sporting two points clear of the Arsenalistas prior to the Clássico.
