Sporting have commenced their 2020/21 Liga campaign with a 2-0 victory away to Paços de Ferreira following consecutive victories from rivals Benfica and FC Porto on Saturday night.

The Lions, in action on Sunday for the first time in domestic competition after last week’s encounter versus Gil Vicente was postponed because of a Coronavirus outbreak, claimed all three points after a Jovane Cabral penalty and Sebastian Coates finish spearheaded Rubén Amorim’s side to victory.

Benfica took their points tally to six after defeating Moreirense by the same margin at home before Porto, in a much-anticipated Invicta Derby versus free-spending Boavista, starred with a 5-0 thrashing.

Elsewhere, Sporting de Braga registered their second defeat of the season as Santa Clara held onto a 1-0 score-line against Carlos Carvalhal’s men at the Estádio Municipal. Here’s the peak of the action from Matchday 2:

It was a highly positive night for Portuguese football in the Europa League as both Rio Ave and Sporting made it through to the playoffs after ousting Besiktas and Aberdeen respectively.

In Istanbul Rio Ave achieved a spectacular result, knocking out the Turkish giants on penalties after a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes. Back in Lisbon, Sporting’s delayed start to the new campaign and depleted squad due to Covid-19 did not stop them overcoming the Scottish side thanks to an early Tiago Tomás goal. 

After a truncated hiatus Liga NOS returned for season 2020/21 this weekend as the action remained behind closed doors due to the global pandemic.

Nacional made a thrilling return to top flight action in their 3-3 with the ambitious Boavista, while fellow new boys Farense tasted defeat to Moreirense.

The top of the table already has a familiar feel to it though as Benfica hammered Famalicão to sit atop the fledgling rankings, with defending champions Porto not far behind after a good win over Braga. 

The Dragões were inspired by another terrific display by Brazilian defender Alex Telles, who is the first PortuGOAL Figure of the Week of this campaign in what might prove one of his final matches for the club.

With the summer transfer window slowly approaching its end, several European clubs will be making haste to bring in players to their club in a bid to strengthen their team for the 2020/21 campaign. While many clubs are satisfied with their signings so far, some clubs are not.

Tottenham Hotspur started their 2020/21 Premier League campaign with a defeat at the hands of Everton. A 1-0 defeat to the Toffees was enough for them to understand the need to bring in new players to the club despite having bounced back against Southampton in a 5-2 victory at the Saint Mary’s Stadium in the second game week.

Although they have completed the signings of Sergio Reguilón and Gareth Bale from La Liga, Spurs are still keen on bringing in Braga’s Portuguese star Paulinho.
