Portugal play Switzerland on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. The two nations know each other well having met on five occasions in recent years, when the home team has always come out on top: Portugal 3 victories, Switzerland 2.

The historical head-to-head record also points to evenly matched teams. In 25 matches Switzerland have won 11, Portugal 9 and there have been 5 draws. But what is the current version of Switzerland all about? Swiss football expert Craig King has the answer. 

Three matches, six points, and a date with Switzerland in the Round of 16, Portugal’s group campaign yielded its share of good fruit. 

But no team was perfect in the group stage for the first time since the 2010 edition. Rather, the football gods were at their capricious best as humiliating upsets and intrigue dominated the opening phase of this World Cup.

Fernando Santos and his Portugal players were disappointed but not crestfallen after the 2-1 defeat to South Korea this afternoon.

The overall sentiment was that lessons should be learned from the loss, but the squad remained focused and confident ahead of their last-16 match next Tuesday. 

Portugal top Group H but end on bum note

It was a case of job done for Portugal but that was the only real positive as the Seleção let an early lead slip in defeat to South Korea.

Ricardo Horta scored inside five minutes but Santos’ side couldn’t kick on from the bright start and their more motivated opponents made them pay with a spirited turnaround capped with a stoppage time winning goal.
