Benfica have seen their lead at the top of the Primeira Liga shrink to one point after picking up their first loss of the season in a 1-0 home defeat to Portimonense.

Despite dominating for large periods of the match, Jorge Jesus’ men saw their goal-scoring opportunities outweighed by a solo Lucas Possignolo goal, blemishing Benfica’s 100% win ratio.

Prior to the match-up at the Estádio da Luz, ten-man FC Porto applied the pressure to the league leaders with a 2-1 comeback at home to Paços de Ferreira, moving the Dragons just a point behind their bitter rivals.

Sporting played the same move with a 2-1 victory of their own, away to newly-promoted Arouca, as Matheus Nunes and Nuno Santos gave Rúben Amorim’s side three hard-earned points.

Braga 3-1 Midtjylland

Braga shrugged off a disappointing first-half performance to score three times after the break and clock up a first win in this season’s Europa League. Two goals by the ever-impressive Wenderson Galeno and another by captain Ricardo Horta turned around the result after Braga had fallen behind to an Evander penalty.

Striker Mario González has still not scored for Braga since his summer move from Tondela, but it was the Spaniard who was the chief architect of the comeback, playing a major role in all three goals after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Benfica have returned to winning ways on the European stage with a historic 3-0 victory against Barcelona at the Estádio da Luz, tonight - their first against the Blaugrana outfit for 60 years.

An early goal from Darwin Nuñez put the pressure on a downbeat Barça, coached by ex-Benfica manager Ronald Koeman, before two further goals in the second half from Rafa Silva and the Uruguayan striker once more gave Jorge Jesus’ men their first UEFA Champions League win of the campaign.

Prior to the heroics in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, FC Porto, much like Sporting before them, fell to a humiliating 5-1 defeat in their first home game of the competition as Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool ran riot at the Estádio do Dragão.

Sporting could do no better, results-wise, although the defeat registered by the Lions was far more conservative this time around, with Donyell Malen marking the difference between the two sides in a 1-0 win for Borussia Dortmund. The seventh round of Liga Bwin 2021/22 provided relief to two struggling teams in Tondela and Moreirense as the pair secured rare wins in the context of the campaign, overcoming Famalicão and Arouca respectively in a couple of closely fought encounters.
