FC Porto 2-0 Benfica
FC Porto have claimed their 22nd Portuguese Super Cup title after a first-half Sérgio Oliveira penalty and a late grab from Luis Díaz secured a 2-0 victory against Benfica in the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro, tonight.
In a game between last season’s first and second-placed Primeira Liga outfits, a VAR-awarded Oliveira spot-kick broke the deadlock in a tense affair between bitter rivals.
The Eagles almost clawed their way back into the game late on via an Alex Grimaldo free-kick, crashing against the woodwork, before Luis Díaz dealt Benfica a killer blow with a late goal to double Porto’s advantage and pick up the first bit of silverware of the season.
The final round of Liga NOS action before Christmas concluded last night, leaving us a familiar top three at the top of the league. Porto and Benfica comfortably made their way past Nacional and Gil Vicente respectively, while leaders Sporting were made to work in leaving it late to overcome Farense.
Sporting have held onto top spot going into Christmas after a late Andraž Sporar penalty secured a 1-0 victory against Farense in a week of wins for Portugal’s Big Three.
Portugal’s three representatives left in European competition paid the price for not being seeded in today’s draw in Nyon.
FC Porto, Braga and Benfica had successful runs in the group stage of their European campaigns and they now await Monday’s draw to see who they will face in the knockout phase of the Champions League and Europa League.
