Sporting are the new leaders of the Primeira Liga after their 4-0 victory over Tondela was followed up with a shock 3-0 win for Boavista at home to Benfica, this Monday.

The Lions starred in the Portuguese capital courtesy of a Pedro Gonçalves brace. The Sporting win was sandwiched by FC Porto’s surprise 3-2 loss to Paços Ferreira, opening a six-point-gap between the two sides, and the Benfica loss, with a previously winless Boavista claiming their first set of three points of the season.

Elsewhere, Sporting de Braga secured a nervy win at home to ten-man FC Famalicão, also on Monday night, to jump up to third. 

Both Benfica and Braga clocked up second successive victories in the Europa League to complete a highly satisfactory week for Portuguese clubs in European competition.

Braga travelled to Ukraine and two early goals, including a stunning strike from debutant Nico Gaitán, paved the way for a 2-1 victory.

Benfica were far too strong for Standard Liege, overcoming the Belgians 3-0. Several new recruits have stolen the show for the Eagles so far this season, but it was veteran Pizzi who starred by hitting a brace at an Estádio da Luz with fans in the stand for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic.  

It was quite a Champions League night for Portuguese football. Porto got their first points of the campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over a Portuguese-heavy Olympiacos side at the Estádio do Dragão, thanks to a goal in each half from Fábio Vieira and Sérgio Oliveira.

Elsewhere, João Félix gave a performance to definitively dispel any lingering doubts about his otherworldly quality. The young Portugal forward was a whisker away from scoring a spectacular opener before going on to terrorise Salzburg. He scored a brace and he could have easily netted several more in a 3-2 win. Diogo Jota continued his dream start to life at Liverpool, scoring again in a 2-0 victory against Midtiylland at Anfield.

Closely-fought encounters was the theme of Jornada 5 of Liga NOS 20/21, “fought” being the key word in a typically fierce Minho derby on Sunday night as Braga narrowly overcame bitter rivals Vitória Guimarães in a game that saw three red cards dished out.

Famalicão and Boavista arguably played out the match of the round as they contested a thrilling 2-2 draw, while it was business as usual for Benfica as they continued their perfect start with victory over Belenenses.

Sporting are a team not to be forgotten in this fledgling title race as they kept up their own unbeaten start. New signing and PortuGOAL Figure of the Week Pedro Gonçalves was in brilliant form to help his side triumph over Santa Clara.
