There is a considerable Liga NOS break coming up now with another international round of fixtures upon us, followed by the top flight’s participation entry into the Taça de Portugal, but the league championship action temporarily ended in some style as Jornada 7 provided no shortage of dramatic action.

Braga stunned Benfica as the Lisbon side’s defensive struggles continued, with Porto and Sporting taking advantage with good wins of their own. The latter extended their lead at the top of the division to four points with a 4-0 drubbing over Vitória Guimarães.

Down towards the bottom there were a couple of vital victories, Tondela overcoming Santa Clara but more notably league new boys Farense finally got their first three points of the campaign with a 3-1 triumph over Boavista. Skipper for the day and PortuGOAL Figure of the Week Ryan Gauld continued his impressive personal start in running the show once more.

Sporting have opened up a four-point-gap at the top of the Primeira Liga table after their impressive 4-0 victory away to Vitória was paired up with Benfica’s 3-2 defeat at home to Sporting de Braga.

The Lions, fuelled by two further goals from the in-form Pedro Gonçalves, took Vitória apart at the Dom Afonso Henriques stadium, racking up successive 4-0 victories.

Rubén Amorim’s weekend was helped by the result coming out of the clash between two of his former sides, as Braga stunned Jorge Jesus’ Benfica at the Estádio da Luz by dealing them their second league defeat of the season.

With the Arsenalistas catching Benfica in second place, FC Porto were also able to close in on the Eagles, prior to Sunday night’s clash, after coming back from a goal down to beat Portimonense 3-1 at home. As always, PortuGOAL’s here to relay the action.

In a manic match at the Estádio da Luz tonight 10-man Benfica produced a Darwin Núñez-inspired late comeback to draw 3-3 against Rangers.

No such luck for Portugal’s other representative in the Europa League however, as a heavily rotated Braga were thrashed 4-0 by EPL high fliers Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. 

FC Porto 3-0 Marseille

Porto may have had a shaky start to the domestic season, but the Dragons continued their good Champions League form at the Estádio do Dragão tonight. Mexican forward Jesús Corona was the star of the show in a comfortable 3-0 triumph over André Villas-Boas’ Marseille.

After a creditable performance and a somewhat unlucky defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad, Porto have reeled off two home victories to put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition for the third time in four years.
