Udinese 1-0 Fiorentina
Portuguese striker Beto is again finding his goalscoring form in Italy’s Serie A, following his winning goal for Udinese against Fiorentina on Wednesday evening.
Beto, who impressed last season with a goal tally of 11 goals in the Italian top flight, has now struck in back-to-back games, having helped his side to a 2-1 victory away against Monza at the weekend.
It was a busy weekend for Portuguese goalscorers across Europe, with a particular emphasis on exploits in the English Premier League. Bruno Fernandes scored the winner for Manchester United against Southampton to kick off the action in England, before Bernardo Silva once again inspired a Manchester City comeback, while Fábio Carvalho got off the mark for Liverpool and Ruben Neves scored another golaço for Wolves.
Elsewhere, Rafael Leão got his first goal of the season for AC Milan in Italy, where Beto also opened his account at Udinese. Nuno Tavares continues to surprise with his goalscoring in France with Marseille and there was another goal for the increasingly consistent Jota for Scottish champions Celtic.
Portugal’s modern-day football legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, is weighing up his options with his second spell at Manchester United in danger of ending on a premature, sour note.
Ronaldo has been continually linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, despite new United boss Erik ten Hag insisting the Portuguese forward is firmly part of his plans this season.
Liverpool 9-0 Bournemouth
There was a very special moment for Portuguese youngster Fábio Carvalho this weekend as the midfielder scored his first goal in the colours of new club Liverpool.
The Reds equalled the Premier League’s biggest victory by hammering Bournemouth 9-0 at Anfield, during which Carvalho came off the bench at half time to score his first goal in top-flight football with a volleyed finish in the 80th minute.
José Fonte will turn 39 in December, but the Portugal and Lille defender has scarcely played as much football as he has during the last year. As skipper of the French side and a regular for the Selecao, Fonte remains as active now as at any point since turning professional some twenty years ago.
Fonte was named Lille’s Player of the Year last term, having played every single minute of action in Ligue 1 – the oldest in history to do so – and clocking 49 appearances in total for club and country. As he prepares to enter his 40th year, Fonte spoke to L’Equipe about his longevity and plans for the future.
