André Gomes, along with many others, came to Everton with a lot of fanfare and seemed to indicate a new era where the Toffees could disrupt the top-six. However, not all has gone according to plan or perhaps even how the player expected things to go. 

The Portuguese player came with excellent pedigree. He was a prestigious talent from the fabled Benfica Youth Academy and then snapped up by Barcelona after spending two seasons with Valencia. However, his metronomic style hasn’t adapted well to the English Premier League. 

Having four Portuguese coaches at the helm of some of Brazil’s biggest clubs for the 2022 campaign was always likely to be a fun ride to follow. However, it has been a Luso coach who is without a job – Jorge Jesus – creating many of the headlines over the last week.

Jesus’ open declaration of interest in returning to his former club Flamengo, where Paulo Sousa is currently in charge, has caused widespread controversy and extreme criticism of the veteran coach. Meanwhile, after five rounds of action in the Campeonato Brasileiro, Vítor Pereira’s Corinthians are the early pacesetters.

As domestic leagues across Europe reach their conclusion, fans of Portuguese players and the national team are taking an interest in which Seleção stars will be celebrating domestic championship titles this season.

The German Bundesliga dominated much of the headlines for Portuguese Abroad goalscorers this week, with Gonçalo Paciência, André Silva and Tiago Tomás all scoring spectacular goals for their respective clubs on Sunday afternoon.

The other major story was Francisco Trincão’s goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who staged a late comeback from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea having been inspired by the former Braga man. Elsewhere, there were goals for Mathias Lage in Ligue 1 and Josué in the Polish Ekstraklasa, as well as Adrien Silva in the UAE.
