Sporting showed no mercy to promoted club Nacional after surging to a 6-1 victory at Estádio da Madeira.

Pote opened the scoring early on but Nacional held on and equalised in the 36th minute, Matheus Dias releasing Nigel Thomas who fired past Vladan Kovačević.

The Lions regained the lead before the break, Trincão playing a 1-2 with Pote and into the bottom corner.

Nacional started the second half strong but were soon 3-1 down after Bruno Costa brought down Geovany Quenda. Viktor Gyökeres stepped up to the spot and made no mistake, sending Lucas França the wrong way.

A howler from Matheus Dias allowed Gemy Catamo to tee up Trincão who made it 4-1, Daniel Bragança scoring the fifth after dancing around some feeble defence and finding the net.

Zeno Debast sent Gyökeres clear in the 76th minute, the striker smashing the ball past França and ratting the bar with the last chance of the match.

FC Porto’s top scorer of last season Evanilson yesterday completed his transfer to English Premier League club Bournemouth, who broke their club record transfer fee to sign him.

The Dragons receive €37 million for the 24-year-old, with a possible additional 10 million euros depending on the player achieving objectives. Porto also negotiated a 10% share of any profit on a future transfer. 

Vítor Bruno’s perfect start to life as Porto’s head coach continued with an easier-than-anticipated victory over Santa Clara in the Azores this afternoon.

Two goals in the opening 25 minutes by Iván Jaime and Wenderson Galeno (penalty) allowed Porto to make it six out of six points in the Primeira Liga, on the back of their Super Cup victory.

Vitória 2-0 FC Zurich (aggregate: 5-0)

Happy days in Guimarães. Vitória made light work of beating Swiss Super League leaders FC Zurich for the second time in a week to give themselves a great chance of becoming the first Portuguese team to qualify for the UEFA Conference League tournament proper.

The clear superiority of Rui Borges’ team was translated into second-half goals by Manu Silva and Telmo Arcanjo as Vitória won 2-0 to complete a 5-0 aggregate victory.

It was the northerners’ fifth win in five matches in 2024/25 with the team yet to concede a goal this season.
