Benfica 4-3 Sporting

Sporting have failed to keep their invincibility record alive after going 32 league games unbeaten, suffering a 4-3 defeat to Benfica at the Estádio da Luz, this Saturday, in the penultimate game of the season.

The champions were stunned coming into the encounter, accumulating a three-goal deficit to a rampant Jorge Jesus side in the first half, prior to Pedro Gonçalves’ first of the evening.

Benfica were quick to add to their lead coming into the second half before two goals in response from Sporting finalised a 4-3 victory that leaves the hosts a point away from FC Porto ahead of the latter’s game against Rio Ave, tonight.

With two rounds of the season remaining Sporting wrapped up their first league title in 19 years thanks to a narrow win over Boavista, keeping their unbeaten run going in the process.

There was cause for celebration elsewhere in Lisbon though as Belenenses SAD secured their Primeira Liga status for 2021/22 in some style, coming from behind to impressively dispatch Tondela at Estádio João Cardoso.

The star man in Viseu was Colombian striker Mateo Cassierra, continuing his recently impressive form with two goals, and he is in focus for this edition of the PortuGOAL Figure of the Week.

Sporting have clinched the Primeira Liga title after defeating Boavista 1-0 at the Estádio José Alvalade, this Tuesday.

The Lions, just two points short of reaching the promised land, rounded up their push for the league title with a first-half goal from Paulinho, securing three sweet points for the Lions.

Rúben Amorim’s men had the chance to celebrate the league title even before entering the field of play, relying on a FC Porto defeat versus Farense on Monday night - a prospect that was met with a resounding victory from the Dragons, winning 5-1 at home.

Although we didn’t see quite as many goals at the Choupana, Benfica’s 3-1 victory against Nacional was one that held huge implications for the latter’s top-flight status, relegating the side from Madeira back down to the second division.

Elsewhere, Sporting de Braga’s season showed no signs of picking back up after slipping substantially behind Benfica in fourth, making it mathematically impossible to catch the Eagles after a 1-1 draw away to Gil Vicente.
