There is only one Portuguese team remaining in Europe after Benfica and Braga were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League this evening.

Benfica went down 3-2 to Arsenal in Greece after blowing a 2-1 lead. The Eagles lost 4-3 on aggregate. Braga were defeated 3-1 against Roma in Italy after a 2-0 loss at home in the first leg.

Jornada 20 of the Liga NOS season saw the underdogs fight back as there were vital results for the sides at the wrong end of the table. Farense battled to a point against Benfica, while Famalicão and Boavista secured rare wins, over Rio Ave and Moreirense respectively. Gil Vicente also got an important three points by beating Santa Clara.

Sporting continued their title charge with a victory over Portimonense, with Porto leaving it late to stay in pursuit with a stoppage time winner against Marítimo.

Another side who perhaps has not quite given up the ghost in the championship race is Braga, who are quietly doing their best to stay in the title fight. They were excellent once more in a 4-2 triumph over Tondela, and their January transfer window signing Lucas Piazon is the PortuGOAL Figure of the Week after a marvellous individual display.

FC Porto have kept their slim title hopes alive ahead of next week’s clash with Sporting after a late Otávio penalty secured a 2-1 victory away to Marítimo, reinstating a ten-point-gap between them and their upcoming first-placed opponents.

The Lions were the first in action at home against a re-emerging Portimonense side, skipping by the southern outfit with a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Sporting de Braga registered an important win of their own, defeating Tondela 4-2 before Benfica prolonged their sorry form away to Farense, drawing 0-0 and falling four points behind third.

Porto pulled the curtains on Matchday 20 with an important win away to Marítimo, setting themselves up for Saturday’s must-win fixture at home to Sporting.

The Europa League action tonight saw Braga helpless to stop Roma when they were reduced to ten men. Ricardo Esgaio was sent off for a second yellow card with the home side already 1-0 down through Edin Džeko, before Borja Mayoral made it 2-0 to give Paulo Fonseca’s side a big advantage.

Meanwhile, a Pizzi penalty put Benfica ahead in Rome against Arsenal, where the Eagles were playing their “home” leg. But the English team equalised to make it 1-1 just moments later through Bukayo Saka in a tense affair that leaves everything to play for in the second leg.
