Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Nice

Portugal international Rony Lopes has enjoyed a good week of goalscoring form, after following up his midweek brace in the Coupe de France with another strike as Nice narrowly lost at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Lopes scored twice against Nimes on Wednesday as Lille progressed with a 3-1 in in the cup, and his brilliantly-taken equaliser five minutes into the second half gave Nice hope of a result at the Parc des Princes on Saturday. The goal was the first conceded by PSG at home in the league since Mauricio Pochettino took charge.

Jose Mourinho has been speaking about his off-field friendship with Pep Guardiola, ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in the Premier League.

Mourinho and Guardiola first met at Barcelona in the mid 1990s, when the former was an aspiring young coach working under Bobby Robson and Guardiola was the lynchpin of the Catalan side’s midfield.

Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes made his debut for Galatasaray on Wednesday evening, and marked the occasion with a goal as his team suffered defeat in the Turkish Cup.

Gedson came on midway through the first half as his side surprisingly trailed Alanyaspor 3-0 in Istanbul in the quarter final. Galatasaray managed to score twice during the closing stages, including Gedson’s stoppage-time consolation, but the Super Lig leaders exit the competition at the last eight stage.

Goals from André Silva and Francisco Trincão on Sunday in the Bundesliga and La Liga respectively capped another strong weekend for some of Portugal’s most high-profile names after Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes had got themselves on the scoresheet the previous day.

Ronaldo scored and was widely praised for his role in Juventus’ 2-0 win against Roma in Serie A, while Fernandes scored with a fantastic long-range effort in the Premier League but was left disappointed as Manchester United were held 3-3 by Everton at Old Trafford.
