Cristiano Ronaldo struck a first-half hat-trick on Sunday evening as Juventus beat Cagliari in Sardinia to maintain their hopes of retaining the Italian Serie A title.

Ronaldo scored all three goals in just over half an hour at the Sardegna Arena and afterwards spoke of finally surpassing the all-time goalscoring record of Brazilian legend Pele, who congratulated the Portugal captain.

Abel Ferreira led Palmeiras to complete a remarkable double on Sunday night by adding the Copa do Brasil to their Copa Libertadores triumph with victory over Gremio in Sao Paulo.

A little over a month on from becoming South American champions, Abel’s side eased to a comfortable 3-0 aggregate victory in Brazil’s domestic cup competition, becoming the first foreign manager to win the trophy.

Valencia 2-1 Villarreal

Gonçalo Guedes scored a last-gasp winner in the Valencian derby on Friday evening, and his subsequent ‘shush’ celebration left many wondering who was target of his gesture.

Valencia came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1 at the Mestalla, with Guedes completing the fightback with a brilliant left-footed finish in stoppage time. Curiously, the Portugal winger’s only other goal this season also came against Villarreal as Los Ches lost the reverse fixture 2-1 in October.

There was a special moment during the midweek Ligue 1 action in France as Portuguese youngster David Pereira da Costa scored his first goal in professional football with what turned out to be the winner for Lens away at Saint Etienne.

The Lisbon-born winger, who recently turned 20, came off the bench with 15 minutes to play for his third substitute appearance of the season as Lens led 2-1 at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Da Costa took advantage of some lax defending to make it 3-1 in injury time, before Saint-Etienne replied with a very late consolation.
