Porto got back to winning ways in the Primeira Liga after a hard fought 2-1 victory against Braga.

Samu Omorodion saw an early goal ruled out at Estádio do Dragão before Galeno won and converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Braga equalised in the 54th minute when Roger Fernandes picked up a loose clearance and fired a fierce shot off the underside of the crossbar.

Porto restored their advantage five minutes later, the influential Nico González assisting Pepê who smashed a low drive past Matheus.

Diogo Costa made a smart save to deny Amine El Ouazzani in added time, the win keeping the Dragons three points behind Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Sporting made it eight wins out of eight in the Primeira Liga as goals in each half from Daniel Bragança and Viktor Gyökeres (penalty) got the job done against Casa Pia.

The visitors lost this corresponding fixture 8-0 last season but they made sure there was no repeat with a resolute defensive display which involved putting nine outfield players behind the ball for most of the match.

But Rúben Amorim’s team always find a way, tonight’s game extending two remarkable runs in the Primeira Liga. It was the 50th consecutive game in which Sporting have scored, and a 21st successive victory at home.

The atmosphere at the Estádio do Dragão promises to be electric for Sunday’s match between FC Porto vs SC Braga. This will be a fascinating and highly entertaining encounter between two of Liga Portugal’s title contenders this season.

SC Braga have had a rollercoaster start to the season and it will not get easier this weekend. After a 3-0 defeat to Olympiacos in Greece on Thursday, they can expect another boisterous crowd in Porto this weekend. FC Porto have struggled in Europe this year, but have won six of their first seven matches in the league and currently sit second in the standings.

Jornada 7 was a fruitful one for the Primeira Liga’s traditional big three with Benfica, Porto and Sporting all winning by big margins. Attention turned to Europe in midweek with Benfica sensationally beating Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Estádio da Luz, whilst Sporting and Porto drew against PSV and Manchester United respectively.

As we recalibrate to domestic football again, the clash of weekend sees Porto host northern neighbours Braga.
